overview

I think a lot about business, and particularly the interaction of technology and communication. I have wide experience of writing for current and emerging channels, but more than this I want to write intelligently in the face of fast changing consumer and employee expectations.

This "intelligence" means I'm interested in framing words for audiences who want to speak as well as listen.

Craft skills

I have the craft skills to manage different styles for different contexts, from print journalism through to corporate positioning online. I have the research skills to assimilate large amounts of information quickly, and the imagination to make connections that may enliven the driest material.

I have worked in many different sectors, on projects ranging from product guidance to brand strategy. I have the experience to understand underlying priorities and business drivers, bringing a strategic dimension to briefings and project planning.

Experience

As a freelance writer I have worked extensively with BT, on projects ranging from simple brochures to various internet and extranet sites. Recent other work includes informational web sites for the Foreign Office and the NHS, as well as digital and print material for Microsoft and the Department for Education and Skills.

I turned freelance in 1992, building on eight years of experience in various advertising and PR consultancies. I can also read French.

I am a fellow of the British Association of Communicators in Business (CIB) and was its chairman from 2003-4. I played (and continue to play) an instrumental role in steering that organisation to its current positioning as the UK's largest and most dynamic professional body for internal communicators.
